Upper Hamlet and Son Ha development

Upper Hamlet and Son Ha development

€143.225 of €1 million raised

In 1982 Thich Nhat Hanh purchased a farmhouse and some land near the small village of Thénac in southwest France.
Thirty-seven years later Plum Village is the largest Buddhist monastery in Europe, with over 200 resident monks and nuns. Additionally, every year Plum Village welcomes thousands of meditation practitioners from around the world who come to experience the art of mindful communal living.

Upper Hamlet is now facing a double challenge: First, the demand for mindfulness retreats is increasing beyond our ability to accommodate all those who would like to visit Plum Village. At the same time, we must bring all buildings up to code to ensure the safety of our residents and visitors. Without these improvements, Upper Hamlet will have to close.

Two years of research into the needs of both resident monastics and retreatants has resulted in a clear vision for the next fifteen years. The first phase of this long-term plan is to create simple, comfortable housing for everyone. We intend to build a new structure with dormitory rooms, smaller accommodations, and bathrooms for 100 people. In addition, we will undertake renovations in the existing buildings to meet official standards for public housing. This initial phase will require two million euro to complete.

To meet this goal, we have received a pledge of matching funds from a generous practitioner, who will double all donations up to one million dollars.
We now have one year to raise one million dollars, and we believe we can do this – with your help.

Please help us preserve Upper Hamlet as a place of refuge for you and future generations. We offer our deepest thanks and gratitude for any gift you can give from your heart.
